Reason:
Walker Lake is a terminal freshwater lake whose water level has dropped significantly during the past several decades due to upstream water diversions and periodic drought. Located in west-central Nevada, the lake is home to native Lahontan cutthroat trout and is a critical stopover for migrating waterfowl, including up to 1,400 common loons - the largest congregation of loons west of the Mississippi. Human intervention, primarily through the acquisition of water rights dedicated to the lake, can save the ecosystem from extinction.

Directions:
From Reno, Nev., (two-hour drive), take I-80 east to Fernley, Nev. then Hwy. 50 to Fallon, Nev. From Fallon, take Hwy. 95 south to Schurz, Nev. A short drive from Schurz is Walker Lake and south of the lake is Hawthorne, Nev.

From Las Vegas, Nev., (five-hour drive), head north on Hwy. 95 through Hawthorne. North of town is Walker Lake.
