The 2007 Walker Lake Loon Festival on Saturday, April 21 is a rare opportunity to see a the largest concentration of common loons west of the Mississippi.

We expect to see up to 1,400 loons in their distinct black and white breeding plumage. Other unique birds that inhabit the lake this time of year include American white pelican, grebes, cormorants and coots, plus thousands of ducks and geese.

Bring your binoculars to view the birds up close from free barge and boat rides provided by the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the Mineral County Search and Rescue, and the Walker Lake Working Group. There will also be free natural history lectures. A fund raising raffle of prizes will be drawn in the afternoon.

Activities begin at 9 a.m. at Sportsman’s Beach. The last boats go out on the lake about 2 p.m. and return at about 3 p.m. Lunch will be available for purchase on the beach.

The Walker Lake Working Group is working for emergency water to help the lake recover. For information in Reno call (775) 677-0927; in Hawthorne call (775) 945-8243.
