Walker Lake Education Day on Saturday, April 25 is a new family event designed highlight the multi-agency/organization effort to save Walker Lake.

You may even get a chance to see some of the largest concentration of common loons west of the Mississippi. We hope to see the loons in their distinct black and white breeding plumage. Other unique birds that inhabit the lake this time of year include American white pelican, grebes, cormorants and coots, plus thousands of ducks and geese.

Bring your binoculars to view the birds up close from free barge and boat rides provided by the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the Mineral County Search and Rescue and the Walker Lake Working Group. There will also be free natural history lectures. A fundraising raffle of prizes will be drawn in the afternoon.

Free boat rides are from 9 a.m. to noon. Exhibits and activities begin are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walker Lake Recreation Area (Nevada State Parks beach). Lunch will be available for purchase on the beach. For information in Reno, Nev., call (775) 677-0927; in Hawthorne, Nev., call (775) 573-2581.
