Walker Lake Education Day 2010
Walker Lake Education Day on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Sportsman's Beach is a family event designed highlight the multi-agency/organization effort to save Walker Lake.
You may get a chance to see some migratory common loons that nest in Saskatchewan, Canada, in their striking black and white breeding plumage. Other unique birds that inhabit the lake this time of year include American white pelican, grebes, cormorants and coots, plus thousands of ducks and geese. Bring your binoculars to view the birds up close from free boat rides provided by the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
Other beach activities include fishing demonstrations, wildlife viewing and free lessons on stand-up paddleboarding, the fastest growing sport in the world.
Get all your questions answered about how and why to save Walker Lake at the more than 20 scientific exhibits from natural resource agencies and organizations that are working on the lake. Entertainment, cultural activities, a fundraising raffle, and lectures on natural history and wildlife studies will begin in the afternoon.
Boat rides, exhibits and activities run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be available for purchase on the beach. For information in Reno, Nev., call (775) 677-0927; in Hawthorne, Nev., call (775) 945-2289 or contact us online.
